One of the little known benefits of being in the military is access to free tax filing and preparation services. There are several options for military personnel to file their taxes for free, including free tax preparation assistance on base, and free tax prep software you can use online to file your taxes. Ryan Guina of the Military Wallet has some suggestions.

Free Tax Assistance on Base – Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is available on base to most service members and some guard and reserve members.

Free Tax Preparation Software for Military Members – If you prefer to do your own taxes, there are several options available online.

Companies participating in the IRS Free File Program – There are several Companies that participate in the program. Be sure to check the eligibility requirements.

Free File with Turbo Tax – Turbo Tax offers free online filing for military members.

Free file with H & R Block at Home – Easy to navigate and use.

Free file with TaxACT and military. TaxACT offers a free file federal version, and a paid version.

Free file with FreeTAXUSA – Free TAXUSA provides a Free File program for federal taxes and an inexpensive Deluxe Edition for $5.95 per return.
