Everyone is different. Some people like the consistency of a 9-5 office job, but others want to be outside or have a job where you never know what you’re going to get. If you’re one of those people who is in the engineering field, we have some environmental and civil engineering careers that could be just the right fit for your career!

Most jobs usually require some office time but these areas will give you more freedom to step outside the office.

Structural Engineering

Environmental Restoration: This field can be very rewarding as there is so much damage done to the natural world. Restoration careers give the opportunity to bring back natural habitats and other things that help species survive. There are special classes in environmental restoration where you will learn just how to restore areas to their natural habitat. If you are a nature lover who doesn’t want an office job, this might be the right career path for you.

Soil and Foundations: Many of these jobs are only done on-site, so it’s a great choice for someone who wants to be hands on and out of the office. Structural engineering or soil mechanics is an important part of construction, this is where the soil will be tested, slopes will be determined and what the surrounding structures are, which is a vital part of development.

Transportation Industries: There are many areas of transportation engineering – planes, trains, etc- that can be a great field to get into. Creating new roads, bridge designs, train tracks and other transportation systems are meticulously planned and executed. Engineers in these fields are usually on-site before the process and drop in to check ensure projects are completed correctly.

Wildlife Protection: This goes hand in hand with environmental restoration because it’s a career that gives you a chance to protect and study many types of wildlife. Many populations of wildlife are monitored for different reasons, especially if they are endangered. If you want to get up close and personal with wildlife in their natural habitat, this might be the best path for you!

Civic Ecology: This is a rewarding career as it gives back to the community. It’s all about revamping areas that have been damaged, polluted or just crumbled. This is one of those feel good careers that at the end of the day, you know you’re doing something to help give back.

These are just a few areas where engineering can take you out of the normal office routine. If you’re one of those that likes to mix things up, these engineering careers might be something to look into.
